In my last lifetime I was a soldier.
And my best friend held me when I died and said,
"What you have done, and you have been - and I have seen -
Remains to me a perfect dream,
Because we are all human beings.
Because you are a human being."
A couple times earlier I was a grandma.
And all my grandkids gathered 'round my old deathbed:
"What you have done, and you have been - and we have seen -
Remains to us a perfect dream,
Because we are all human beings.
Because you are a human being."
When I was a tiny baby born to early,
Then my sad mama lay down in the night and cried,
"What you have done, and you have been - and I have seen -
Remains to me a perfect dream,
Because we are all human beings.
Because you were a human being."
When I was cruel my enemies chased me.
And when they caught me I heard them, as I lost my head:
"What you have done, and you have been - and we have seen -
Remains to us a perfect dream,
Because we are all human beings.
Because you are a human being."
When we were starving and no one could spare a thought,
As I lay dying, my brother found what I had sought:
"What you have done, and you have been - and I have seen -
Remains to me a perfect dream,
Because we are all human beings.
Because you are a human being."
And as we travel, you and I, upon the road,
I know my feelings to you must one day be told:
"What you have done, and you have been - and I have seen -
Remains to me a perfect dream,
Because we are all human beings.
Because you are a human being."
